Discover P.B. and The Pacific Beach Hospitality Task Force

Everyone is familiar with Pacific Beach, but not everyone may be aware of Discover Pacific Beach, one of the most powerful promotional and economic forces behind the community since 1997. Discover PB is the second largest business improvement district in San Diego with 1,300 business members, and covers both Pacific Beach and its southern neighbor, Mission Beach.

Discover Pacific Beach's mission is to constantly revitalize the Pacific Beach community, breathing life into the community's economy and physical state. In order to reach its goals, Discover P.B. has incorporated four project committees into its being, including Promotions, Community Advisory, Design and Improvement, and The Pacific Beach Hospitality Task Force.

Of these beneficial project committees, Alternative Strategies has been retained to pay special focus on The Pacific Beach Hospitality Task Force. Formed in 2000, the Hospitality Task Force has been serving the coastal neighborhood of Pacific Beach with a strong sense of community that has grown increasingly rare in modern times. Members of The Hospitality Task Force's consist mainly of Pacific Beach business owners and managers, as well as representatives of the San Diego Police Department, RADD, and volunteers from the surrounding community.

With the ultimate goal of promoting P.B. as a fun and safe place to live and visit, The Hospitality Task Force spends much of its time seeking out, and solving, safety issues in the community. It has been successful in providing a platform for communication for all associated with Pacific Beach, and it is this system that has ultimately led to a long list of achievements within the community. This includes contributing over $1 million back into the community throughout its eleven-year tenure.

In past years, The Pacific Beach Hospitality Task Force has been successful in reducing crime by installing over $100,000 worth of security devices, encouraging heightened patrol of alcohol intake with the “Out of Cars and Into Bars” program, and placing eight additional taxi stands in the area. Additionally, it has increased safety by conducting extensive security training for door hosts and alcohol training for bar staff. The Hospitality Task Force has also been beneficial in placing additional trash cans throughout Garnet Avenue, producing the P.B. Holiday Parade, and participating in clean-up programs that ensure Pacific Beach remains a clean and safe destination.

This year, The Hospitality Task Force celebrated its 10 year anniversary by presenting two fully equipped police bicycles to the San Diego Police Department Beach Team, a $3,000 value that was the result of member donations and fundraising. Furthermore, the Hospitality Task Force, along with RADD, recently launched the “My Safe Ride Home” program, which allows the use of pre-paid taxi cards to get home safely, in lieu of driving home during risky situations.

In most recent news, The Hospitality Task Force will begin a weekly farmer's market in Pacific Beach beginning on Tuesday, July 5th. The market will be located at the cross-section of Bayard and Garnet, and will take place every Tuesday from 2pm-6:30pm. Featuring a range of local produce, artisan foods, and locally crafted items, the Hospitality Task Force expects the Pacific Beach Farmer's Market will be a welcomed addition to the community.

Alternative Strategies is excited to be working with Discover P.B. and The Pacific Beach Hospitality Task Force, as together they strive to bring positivity to one of the most popular beach communities of San Diego.
