The Brigantine Family of Restaurants

Created by husband-and-wife team Mike and Barbara Morton, the first Brigantine Seafood Restaurant opened in 1969 on Shelter Island, its name the result of a ticket drawn from a hat. During its rough beginnings, this founding restaurant's menu offered a mere nine-item selection. This included a dish appropriately named the “Late Night Entrée,” and the disappointingly unpopular “Beef Stew,” which would be the first item ever axed from the restaurant's menu.

This first Brigantine Seafood location stood alone for nearly four years, until 1973, when the Mortons decided to open a second Brigantine Seafood Restaurant on Coronado Island. Across the way from the historic Hotel Del Coronado, this second location garnered the Morton family a wealth of success, and marked a point at which The Brigantine secured itself steady growth. Today, The Brigantine Seafood Restaurants boast seven busy locations throughout the county, and are home to the restaurant's award-winning “Best Swordfish in the World.” As an interesting side note, Brigantine founder Mike Morton played a large part in coining the term “Catch of the Day,” which is now seen on seafood menus across the globe.

In 1983, the Mortons were no longer satisfied to fill just one niche, so by optimizing on the talent already held in their Brigantine kitchens, they debuted The Brigantine Family of Restaurant's newest addition: Miguel's Cocina. This Mexican-themed eatery was an instant hit among locals, and grew to number five in favorite locations throughout the county. With an array of full-flavored menu items, including its signature Jalapeño White Sauce, and an exotic ambiance that encourages the mind to travel, Miguel’s is a festive escape to a delicious cultural experience.

Following Miguel's Cocina, a third establishment gave rise, aptly named Miguelito's. Located in Coronado, Miguelito's, Sala de Artes y Comer (“room of art and food”) is the zesty little brother and next door neighbor of the original Miguel’s Cocina. In addition to authentic Mexican cuisine, this unique neighborhood-style cafe includes a gift shop, art gallery, and private dining room, all influenced by the varied cultures of Mexico. Whether feasting on custom-made tamales or planning a private party, Miguelito's is a memorable addition to The Brigantine Family.

Last but never least, The Steakhouse at Azul La Jolla is The Brigantine Family of Restaurant's most recent and prestigious dining establishment. Its high end surf-and-turf-styled menu is attraction enough, but what truly sets Azul apart are the floor-to-ceiling windows vividly showcasing the restaurant's placement 100 feet above La Jolla Cove. A testament to Executive Chef Carmine Lopez' fine dining menu and Azul's lofty ambiance and exemplary guest services, The Steakhouse at Azul La Jolla has been recognized by San Diego time and again as the very best in its class.

No matter which of these establishments strikes your fancy, The Brigantine Family of Restaurants and its 14 restaurant locations are first and foremost committed to delivering a high level of customer service. The company makes its name by consistently providing guests with outstanding experiences. Each restaurant has developed into a San Diego staple of excellence, and in coming times, The Brigantine Family of Restaurants intends to continue raising the bar for San Diego dining establishments. Future plans include thorough branding of the restaurants, additional locations, food truck services, and bringing Miguel's Jalapeno White Sauce to retailers in, and around San Diego.
