Full Moon Drive In

Everything old is new again, and this month's featured client is thrilling audiences based on that very notion. Full Moon Drive-In, located in Pacific Beach, is the area's one and only drive-in movie theater. It boasts a 52' inflatable screen, concession stand and room for more than 150 cars. Patrons tune in to the Full Moon Drive-In station via their car's radio dial, and their movie can be heard over the speakers. Park the car facing forward, or aim the end of an SUV towards the screen and open up the back hatch. Full Moon Drive-In even has a lounge seating area near the screen.

Full Moon Drive-In opened in 2012 in the parking lot of Pacific Beach Middle School. Operating the first drive-in theater in San Diego since 1966 came with challenges. Owner David Adler turned to Alt Strat for public relations and social media management. Although Full Moon Drive-In is a permanent business, the screen is only inflated Thursday through Sunday evenings a few hours before show time. Alt Strat's PR department is tasked with crafting messaging for local and national media (click here for our link on CBS Sunday Morning) which communicates the drive-in's permanent status in San Diego.

Unlike a typical movie theater in more ways than one, Full Moon Drive-In's customers pick the movies. The Alt Strat social media department engages fans and followers through a variety of platforms where they're able to vote on which movies play on the big screen. David Adler, owner of Full Moon Drive-In says, "We are all big movie fans of course, and we realized the need for a real life social experience. We always try and do something different. When we featured 'E.T.,' we gave everyone Reese's Pieces as they were driving in. For 'Top Gun,' two of our staff members dressed up as Goose and Maverick. Adding this new dimension of fun creates an interactive, as well as a visual experience."

Big things are in the works for Full Moon Drive, so be sure to visit fullmoondrivein.com for their upcoming movie schedule. To keep up with the latest news about this retro drive-in theatre in Pacific Beach, follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
