The Importance of a Strong Company Mission Statement
And How to Craft Your Own

Do you "aim to provide excellent service" or "strive to be the leader in your field?" Of course you do, but so does every other company out there. Say goodbye to generic, and hello to genuine. Your mission statement is a chance to convey your goals, values and vision not only to your consumers and clients, but also to your employees and the community.

You may have the urge to quickly power out a mission statement, but be warned; it’s a short statement with a long-lasting impact. It should be crafted thoughtfully and diligently. Make every word count. According to Forbes.com, your mission statement should answer four simple questions:

  • What do we do?
  • How do we do it?
  • Whom do we do it for?
  • What value are we bringing?

Mission statements are more than marketing tools and should be treated accordingly. A strong mission statement should effectively express the image you are trying to build. In addition to informing consumers as to the values and philosophies of your company, a strong mission statement can also serve as a guiding light for employees.

Your mission statement should be memorable. The two biggest mistakes people make in crafting their mission statements, as laid out by Entrepeneur.com, are generalizations and fluff. If your company name could easily be replaced with the name of another, it's time to do some revising. Plus, vague and meaningless "fluff" will lose the interest of your consumers. Much like a good fitting blazer, your mission statement should be tailored to you.
