Teach For America

New to the Alternative Strategies client list is the nationally-recognized, non-profit organization, Teach For America. Their mission is to “enlist, develop and mobilize as many as possible of our nation’s most promising future leaders to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence.” Teach For America’s San Diego chapter is optimizing mentorship channels in the community, while creating opportunities for our future workforce. Teach for America recruits recent college graduates who work to ensure that children, regardless of their economic background, are afforded a positive and encouraging educational environment to maximize their full potential.

Having just celebrated their 25th anniversary, Teach For America has reached huge milestones, and continues to do so with the passion and determination of those involved. Based on an idea developed from a college thesis paper, Teach For America has grown to great heights to help students around the world. Most of those who are involved are pursuing careers outside of the teaching industry, yet all share the idea that giving back not only helps students, it enhances the lives of the teachers themselves. Building partnerships between families, students and communities, Teach For America “corps” members are building foundations for themselves, as well as increasing the educational opportunities for the students they serve.

In its third year, the San Diego chapter of Teach For America is spearheaded by Executive Director, David Lopez. Growing up in Little Italy and North Park, Lopez understands the landscape of the San Diego community, including the educational components that need to be addressed. San Diego is home to the sixth largest school district in the nation, and the student success rate is exceedingly diverse, with students from low-income communities finding themselves severely limited for future opportunities.

Teach For America continues to recruit those who share similar beliefs that when students’ needs are supported, their chances of succeeding inherently increase. With the drive and passion of this organization and its supporters, San Diego’s future educational condition is sure to lead to the prosperity of both the student and the community as a whole.
